The Economic Situation

The Papineau RCM is historically renowned for its green and blue treasures: forest and water. Today, its economy is dynamic and varied. Industry, tourism and agriculture are developing sectors.

Like Québec in its entirety, the forest industry has seen a strong decline. This has reinforced the establishment of the tourism sector, the resort community in particular. Moreover, numerous tourism centres recognized internationally are located on the Papineau RCM territory:  Kenauk Nature, Fairmont Château Montebello, Parc National de Plaisance, Lac-Simon Tourism Centre, Parks Canada - National historic site of Manoir-Papineau, and Parc Omega.

With companies such as Plancher Lauzon, Fortress Specialty Cellulose Inc. and infrastructure like Parc Industriel Régional Vert de Papineau, second and third transformation of wood remain important manufacturing sectors of Papineauville's economy. Entrepreneurs from the Forest industry have successfully produced value-added specialty products, such as “smart” hardwood flooring.  Specialized employment in a quality environment awaits you.

The Papineau RCM boasts a diversified and flourishing agricultural production. According to the latest information from the MAPAQ, in 2010, the agricultural sector produced 28 million dollars in investments towards the local economy. 30% of certified organic agricultural businesses in the Outaouais region are located in this territory. Emerging sectors are vegetable production and niche animal production. The presence of deciduous forest offers a strong potential for the development of maple syrup and non-timber forest products (wild mushrooms, ginseng). In comparison to other regions of Québec and Canada, the value of agricultural land remains affordable: approximately $4,000/hectare.

The public and parapublic sectors are also dominant in the regional economy; municipalities, school boards, and various health and social services are also major employers.

The Papineau RCM is a rural living environment that is near major urban centres and offers competitive economic opportunities.
